I've taken what I've learning about rigging cars over the last few years and built what I'm calling "Vehicle Toolkit."  Vehicle Toolkit is a vehicle animation rig solution for Autodesk Maya.  The idea is that a client can send me a car or any sort of vehicle model and I can send back the model fully rigged in most cases overnight.  Check out this timelapse of fitting a vehicle toolkit rig to car model:
